Kissimmee

Long before Mickey Mouse came to Kissimmee Florida, making it one of the happiest places on earth, the area was a trading post known as Allentown. It is reported that the purchase of the land, that later became the city of Kissimmee, saved the state of Florida from financial disaster. The purchaser of the land drained his new swamp and deepened the Kissimmee River. This was done to open up a trade route to from Allentown to the Gulf of Mexico. The area became a prosperous community producing cattle and sugar cane. On March 24, 1883 the area was incorporated into a city. At that time the citizens changed the name to Kissimmee.

By the early to mid-1900s the cattle and sugar cane industries had turned into a booming citrus business. WWII brought the construction of the Kissimmee Airport by the Army Corp of Engineers. This increased the population of Kissimmee from 2,700 to 3,700 in a matter or a few years. A major real estate boom started in the area soon after the airports completion. The region has continued to grow ever since. The latest census puts the Kissimmee population at more than 41,000.

In 1971, Walt Disney World opened its gates. Kissimmee would become a mega vacation destination that year. Many hotels, motels and restaurants sprang up to accommodate Kissimmee's newest industry. Good year-round weather and close proximity to Florida's golden beaches has helped Kissimmee's tourism industry to thrive throughout the late-1900s and continue to be strong today.
